Stress and the Small Business Owner
A recent white paper from the business department of a leading Texas university concluded that many small business owners in America suffer from ‘continuing stress syndrome’. In truth, the same can be said for many of the owners of small businesses around the world.
Struggling on a day-to-day basis with the complexities of managing and growing a business, many owners feel they are on their own and have little or no help available to them. While they may look to their accountants, lawyers, family and even friends for advice, they often feel these people could not be completely objective and / or they don’t want to worry them.
So in the face of issues like declining cash flow, employee problems and lagging sales, they battle on regardless, doing the same things in the same way and hoping that business will pick up.
The study also found that business owners who had no-one to discuss their business issues with, were more likely to “stew” on things, work longer hours and were generally less well balanced personally and professionally than business owners who had social networks and business advisors with whom to discuss their concerns.
At Business Fit Club we recognise that what business owners need most are not complex solutions but someone who is seasoned and successful to listen to their issues and who can help them deal with their business’ problems in an open, honest and non-judgmental way.
Our group Business Development Programmes were created three and a half years ago in recognition of the very challenges highlighted in this recent study. We limit the numbers in each group to between 4 and 6 to ensure that everyone has enough “air time”. We place great emphasis on confidentiality, so that each group member can get things of their chest in the sure knowledge that it doesn’t go outside the group.
Working in such a tight knit group generates a powerful support network which accelerates business improvement and boosts the confidence of the members.
It seems that we recognised three and a half years ago what the Academics in the USA are talking about now.
Maybe we are ahead of our time!
